Sustainability Projects During 2021

The IB students have carried on the theme of service to the community by undertaking a range of projects to promote sustainability both in and out of School. To complement the Geography seminars that they have been having on Sustainability and the Population Resource debate, pupils have acted upon the “Think Global – Act Local” Agenda 21 mantra. Within our School grounds, they have taken on two projects. The Memorial garden, which is located by the entrance to Lupton House, is being turned into a reflective space, designed around the Hornbeam tree and poem. Students have already cleared the space and have worked with the Estates team to design a formal space.

The second on-site project is the bee friendly garden behind Oakley. IB students took on the challenge of removing the bamboo, which had established itself in this area – they could appreciate what Mrs Holden meant by the term “Green Gym” by the end of the first session. A planting plan that includes many pollen rich varieties has been put together and it will be exciting to see how this space changes over the weeks of the project.

The third project takes the students out of the School ground into the beautiful countryside of Worcestershire. Working alongside the volunteers at Hartlebury Castle, they have been working in the grounds to help prepare the nature trail for visitors. We also hope to get involved with the establishment of an adventure playground, which increases access to the grounds and nature for the local children.

All of these projects support the School’s commitment to promoting sustainability and the Lets go Zero campaign led by the School’s environmental committee.
