Bromsgrove Preparatory School

A Note from the Headmaster

I am delighted to be able to welcome you to Bromsgrove Preparatory School. Established in 1940, in Llanwrtyd Wells, when Bromsgrove School was evacuated during World War Two, the Preparatory School now stands in its own spacious grounds adjacent to Bromsgrove Senior School.

Bromsgrove Preparatory School offers an exceptional all round co-educational experience for children aged 7 to 13, set within a 100 acre campus with a balance of boys and girls, day and boarding, offering families a real choice.

At Bromsgrove we are passionate about education. We believe that the right education creates a life-long love of learning and prepares children to take their place in the world as responsible, caring adults with good manners, self discipline, honesty and consideration for others. Academically, we combine high class modern teaching methods without forgetting the best of traditional values to create a climate where every child can flourish, and find where their particular talents lie.

We aim to nurture and challenge our children; we recognise that children need to be guided but also given the freedom to think for themselves and to develop a true sense of self. Individual achievements, and the importance of team efforts, are both highly valued. Within that ethos, we also recognise that a healthy mental life and emotional wellbeing is key to developing pupils’ health and happiness in all aspects of their present and future lives. Our school pastoral system has pupil’s social, emotional, and mental health at the heart of our actions.

All pupils are encouraged to achieve their best in academic, sporting and creative fields, while at the same time developing their social skills; manners, a respect for each other and those around them, kindness, helpfulness and a willingness to participate for the benefit of others.

The Preparatory School’s beautiful grounds offer the perfect backdrop for outstanding sports provision and play. We are proud of our excellent sporting reputation, achieved through strong coaching at all levels, and a commitment to provide all children with the opportunities to discover and develop their sporting skills.

Equally impressive is our reputation in the creative arts. Music thrives, with many of our pupils engaged in learning at least one instrument, playing in the orchestra or ensemble groups, or singing in the choir. Informal and formal concerts are highlights of the academic year. Drama is also strong at all levels in the Preparatory School and productions, small and large, regularly involve many of our pupils.

We would be delighted to show you around our School so that you can experience for yourself the happy and caring atmosphere that underpins all we do – please call the Admissions Department to arrange a visit. You can also find information about joining the Prep School here

Prep School

In the Prep School, each pupil is allocated a member of the teaching staff as their tutor or class teacher. The tutor team in each year report to a Head of Year who in turn reports to the Deputy Head (Pastoral). Pupils are encouraged to air views and feelings, and to raise matters that concern them. Parents should feel involved at every stage of a child’s development, and Bromsgrove prides itself on levels of care and guidance, as well as the links it fosters with parents and guardians.

Pupils are self-disciplined and courteous, treating each other with respect and compassion. Expectations are high; standards and values are important.
Founded as a boarding school, Bromsgrove Preparatory School offers its many day pupils the same range of opportunities as their friends who live on site in term time.

Essentially, the breadth of education in all areas reflects the boarding school ethos. The aspiration is that for boarders, the Boarding House is a home from home. Resident Houseparents are members of the teaching staff, and they are assisted by Housemothers (who oversee the domestic arrangements) and non-resident House tutors. Boarding is an enjoyable experience, where lifelong friendships are created, confidence is built upon and the opportunities are broad. Occasional boarding is possible; we are flexible if boarders wish to go home on a Saturday night (most do not), and Sunday programmes are hugely varied.

There is a team of dedicated nurses who provides onsite medical care in the School’s Health Centre; as well as a School Doctor. The Health Centre staff work closely with the academic staff for the benefit of the pupils in our care.

The School Catering Department provide high quality, freshly prepared and nutritious meals for all pupils, both day and boarding.
