Bromsgrove Preparatory School

What is the school aiming to achieve with its pupils? What makes us distinctive from most other prep schools in the area?

We are proud to be one of the increasingly few Midlands prep schools whose senior pupils transfer at the end of Year 8. It is in my opinion the very best time to move schools. The young adults who leave us at 13 are well rounded, confident and far better able to manage with life in a senior school environment, and because of the well-established academic and pastoral links we have in place throughout Bromsgrove School, they also move on with no academic treading of water. The move at this point in time to the senior school enables them to continue to develop in every way. The extremely impressive academic results and extra curricular successes of the Senior School suggest that this established process is very effective.

Bromsgrove Prep School itself is a busy, buzzing and stimulating environment. It is a great place to go to school, and importantly from the staff perspective, also to work. It is without doubt a forward thinking and dynamic school, but also one which holds on to traditional values and expectations so important to get on in today’s changing and challenging world. We do expect a great deal from the children, we do challenge them to make the most of the talents they all have in them.

If you like what you hear, do visit us and see the school in action. We are always very happy to show prospective families around and to tell you more about life at Bromsgrove Prep School. We are confident that you will not be disappointed.

At the Prep School we very much follow the whole Bromsgrove School ethos and firmly believe in offering a broad, varied and balanced curriculum, where there are numerous opportunities for all of the children to discover where their particular talents lie. Creating these opportunities is at the core of what I feel we should be doing. As a result, the educational experience the children have at Bromsgrove Prep School reflects this approach. In practical terms, last year alone we put out 63 different school teams, put on 4 drama productions as well as numerous musical events, while the varied daily and weekend activities programme gives plenty of opportunities for the children to have a go and find out what they are good at.

This last point is important, since we firmly believe that every single child has a particular talent for something, or a number of things, and finding this something, is what we strive to do. This is like the key to their confidence, something from experience we know that every child needs to be able to develop and flourish.

A Note from the Headmistress

I am delighted to be able to welcome you to Bromsgrove Preparatory School. Established in 1940, in Llanwrtyd Wells, when Bromsgrove School was evacuated during World War Two, the Preparatory School now stands in its own spacious grounds adjacent to Bromsgrove Senior School.

Bromsgrove Preparatory School offers an exceptional all round co-educational experience for children aged 7 to 13, set within a 100 acre campus with a balance of boys and girls, day and boarding, offering families a real choice.

At Bromsgrove we are passionate about education. We believe that the right education creates a life-long love of learning and prepares children to take their place in the world as responsible, caring adults with good manners, self discipline, honesty and consideration for others. Academically, we combine high class modern teaching methods without forgetting the best of traditional values to create a climate where every child can flourish, and find where their particular talents lie.

We aim to nurture and challenge our children; we recognise that children need to be guided but also given the freedom to think for themselves and to develop a true sense of self. Individual achievements, and the importance of team efforts, are both highly valued.

All pupils are encouraged to achieve their best in academic, sporting and creative fields, while at the same time developing their social skills; manners, a respect for each other and those around them, kindness, helpfulness and a willingness to participate for the benefit of others.

The Preparatory School’s beautiful grounds offer the perfect backdrop for outstanding sports provision and play. We are proud of our excellent sporting reputation, achieved through strong coaching at all levels, and a commitment to provide all children with the opportunities to discover and develop their sporting skills.

Equally impressive is our reputation in the creative arts. Music thrives, with many of our pupils engaged in learning at least one instrument, playing in the orchestra or ensemble groups, or singing in the choir. Informal and formal concerts are highlights of the academic year. Drama is also strong at all levels in the Preparatory School and productions, small and large, regularly involve many of our pupils.

We would be delighted to show you around our school so that you can experience for yourself the happy and caring atmosphere that underpins all we do – please call the Admissions Department to arrange a visit.

Junior Department (Maple House)

Enter Maple and you are hit with light, colour and space; the perfect environment for children from the age of seven to experience a rigorous education. Discipline is a given when children have the space to grow and expectations to live up to. Catering for auditory, visual and kinaesthetic learners, flair is the order of every day. Life is never dull in Maple!

Junior Bromsgrovians are fortunate to learn in purpose-built classrooms, each enjoying its own patio, interactive whiteboard and ‘wet’ area. A set of laptop computers, linked to the school intranet, internet and printer is shared between the Years 3 and 4 classes as are book areas and tactile display spaces.

In both Years 3 and 4 there are three classrooms. The children are generally taught in parallel groups by experienced and enthusiastic primary teachers. There are four Year 5 classrooms which are used as a base for the children. As a step towards specialist subject teaching, the children in this year group move between lessons to subject teachers in all areas of the school. The children experience a transition between primary and secondary teaching techniques. They are nurtured through this journey by supportive tutors and the Head of Year 5.
