Baby Unit Knitting

Knitting for charity (formerly known as baby knitting) is a hidden gem of an activity, situated in the cosy basement of the art department. The toasty room, which contrasted greatly with the chilly December air, had a cheery and welcoming atmosphere, quite fitting the Christmas cheer which had settled in the Bromsgrove community with the end of term steadily approaching, as the group of just under 10 participants eagerly knitted their latest project- squares! And while this may not seem all that exciting all on its own, the process of what happens to the squares is a whole different story.

Each square is carefully sewn into a cone-like structure, which is then stuffed with wool and then sewn shut and knotted to resemble the shape of a mouse. After the multi-coloured woollen mice are formed, they are donated to an animal shelter where the animals - especially the cats - go mad for them! This is being done as a start up activity so the group can get a good grasp on the basics of knitting and later on in the year, they might progress to making items of clothing such as scarves or a patchwork quilt made up of many squares sewn together into one big blanket.

Overall, spending time with the knitters felt like entering a secret world, tucked away from the rest of the world, where one could easily find themselves calmly knitting while having a chat with friends and just taking a moment to relax from the stress of a hectic schedule.

And that is it for this week’s article! Thank you for your time reading this article and be sure to keep a look out for our upcoming articles or take a look at our previous articles as well.
