23 June 2019

And Shervin’ s view on the ship...

Looking ahead to Commemoration Day –

All pupils, including those returning from examination leave, are required in School on Friday 28th June. Boarders from 9pm on Thursday 27th. The day is important for a number of end of term assemblies and events, finishing with the Leavers’ Service, which should end at the normal leave time of 5.15pm. The Boarders' BBQ will follow this and then we will set up our House marquee. Weekly boarders are expected to stay in School on Friday evening. In addition, can I request that the boys spend their last night in the House and not spend time with their parents; they have a long summer ahead with you! You are more than welcome to come in to House on Saturday morning to say hello, take photos etc between 8.30-9.30am.

Timings as a guide for Commemoration Day:

• Pupils in Upper Fourth and above should register with me in House at 9.00am, leaving time for them to pick up their buttonhole before we depart, as a House, for St John’s Church in town for the 10am Commemoration Service. Please note that only parents with tickets are able to attend this service.

• On returning from the church service, all year groups remain in House until we move (11.30am) to the marquee on Routh Green in time for the Speeches and Prizegiving ceremony, starting at 12pm. All parents are welcome to attend this part of the day’s programme – I would advise arriving from 11.30am, as seating is largely on a first come first served basis.

• After the ceremony, around 1.30pm, if you have booked tickets to spend the afternoon in our Marquee, you make your way down to us around the edge of the main cricket field. You are also free to walk around elsewhere until the Chapel bell sounds at 4.15pm to summon everyone to Final Call-Over, which begins promptly at 4.30pm. In the intervening time, I hope you all have booked to join us in the Elmshurst House marquee; some may have booked lunch in the School’s PA Marquee. Some will view the various activities around campus (cricket match, displays around school or sit and listen music on Gordon Green).

• Final Call-Over marks the official end to the academic year and for some and era for the Elmshurst boys.

• Once the House has been through and shook the Headmasters hand, we will make our way back down to the House marquee; you are more than welcome to join us.

Dress code is formal for boys throughout the day - it is their smartest School uniform (dark suits for Sixth Form) including boaters.

Well, this is the last Sunday evening I will spend doing this! I may have missed one in the last seven years, but I do not think it will be any more. A simple, but important way to keep in touch with your parents. I should look back through at some point and maybe pull together a highlights package! Many many highlights, with the obvious challenges of being in charge of 100 teenage boys. Too many sleepless nights worrying about them… A true vocation and a way of life for Mrs Fallows, Freddie, Jenny and myself. The last year or so has thrown up its challenges, but the fact I am handing over a new purpose built boarding house, which I have been privileged to have a big say in its redevelopment is a good time to finish. It is also a good time as I am handing over the house to Mr Giles with one of my strongest groups, the current Lower Sixth; a group I am extremely fond of. I have big hopes for them with many quality leaders within their group.

Sans Peur!
