U11 boys' Rugby 7s at Millfield

U11 boys win the Millfield 7s for the first time ever this weekend, and the U13s runners up in Plate Final.

On Saturday 14th March, both our U11 A and U13A rugby 7s teams travelled to the grandiose setting that is MILLFIELD School, Somerset. This turned out to be a memorable day indeed for our boys. Mr Jones reminded the boys of our growing stature nationally sporting wise, especially given events of 1st XV last Saturday in London, and that they had nothing to fear on the rugby pitch.

The U13s were drawn in a very tough group which included Caldicott Prep School, Downsend, Shrewsbury House and Clifton College. All our matches were very competitive and at the end of the group stage we ended up qualifying for the Plate competition, which still had some big guns in it. In the quarter final we defeated a good Port Regis side coming from 14-0 down. Likewise in the semi final we overturned a deficit versus Monmouth School before running or comfortable winners. This put us in the Plate Final versus Caldicott, which further highlighted how strong our group was as we both had finished third and fourth in our group. We had a poor first half and found ourselves 21-0 down. The second half however was all Bromsgrove as we scored 17 unanswered points but just ran out of time to score a fourth try. A great effort by the boys and they have now qualified for three consecutive finals. Last team from Prep School to do this was current Lower VIth.

The U11s though rightly steal the headlines. Despite playing in the National IAPS Hockey finals on Monday, coming 11 th, they became the first ever Prep School team to win the Millfield 7s. Despite losing their first group match, the boys grew in stature as the day progressed defeating well known rugby schools on their way to the final, Taunton Prep, Caldicott and then avenging their loss to Moulsford in the group stages by defeating them 5-0 in the final. It was a special moment for Mr Kippax their coach as he has played for Millfield Prep in this very competition himself while at the school.

All our boys were a huge credit to the school on what was a very long day. Many thanks to all the parents for their support.
