Music, Drama and The Arts

Bromsgrove Preparatory School has a thriving Music, Drama and Arts Department. Music is based in the Webber building, it shares its facilities with the Senior School, providing excellent facilities for our musicians.

Every pupil is taught academic music, where the focus is on developing an appreciation for different styles and genres of music and gaining confidence in performance – particularly through basic keyboard skills. New for September 2014 is the Year 3 Strings Initiative which aims to get all Year 3 pupils learning a string instrument.

In the classroom, music is taught in a number of ways using a variety of instruments and through singing. Visits to the nearby Symphony Hall in Birmingham enrich classroom teaching and encourage participation and learning. Visiting musicians and performers enhance the curriculum further providing opportunities for pupils to hear professional musicians at work.

The Prep School has an extensive range of Ensembles ranging from Orchestra, Flute Group, Brass Band to Jazz Group, Rock School, Samba with much in-between. Rehearsals run throughout the year with a large variety of concerts on offer for pupils to perform in – whatever age or standard they are. For current music timetables, please visit the Parent Portal site (log-in required).

Perhaps the most significant and public ensemble is the Prep School Choir. The choir meets three times a week, singing regularly for pupils in Chapel. They also sing in concerts throughout the year and other special occasions. Recent events include singing at Birmingham Cathedral, St John’s Church, Bromsgrove and the Normal Power Centre in Ladywood. The choir enjoys a music tour every two years, most recently visiting cities such as Paris, Rome and Edinburgh.

Drama productions ranging from 'Ye-Ha!' to 'Bugsy Malone' are put on Cobham Hall throughout the year, to the delight of pupils throughout all year groups. Whether it's Year 3 pupils making their first foray into the world of theatre or Year 8 pupils who have performed on stage every year, the productions are first class.

A thriving art department, based in the Llanwrtyd Centre, produces some of the finest young artists' work each year, some of which goes on display at the whole school end of year Art and DT show based at the Senior School. You can find out more about the art department by visiting their departmental page
