Support and Monitoring

All Bromsgrove pupils should be stretched well beyond the confines of the curriculum, but the most able sometimes need specially tailored prgrammes. Comfort zones are unhelpful places for young, lively minds.

Able pupils are identified using a variety of methods including aptitude testing, recommendation by subject teachers, results in tests and performance in examinations. Pupils in the Lower Fourth, Upper Fourth and Fifth Forms are invited to weekly lunchtime sessions designed to stimulate interest in topics not on the normal curriculum. Over the past three years many things have been discussed from the unique contribution of Einstein to the health benefits of chocolate. Senior pupils join subject specific groups and have extension sessions on Thursday afternoons. These aim to prepare the pupils for Oxbridge entrance but are designed to be as enjoyable as they are rigorous. Oxbridge preparation and equivalent also involves one to one tutorials and seminars on broader themes. We encourage Bromsgrovians to challenge orthodoxies and develop as original, creative thinkers.

Reports and Effort Grades

Reports are always written to encourage and advise, but they are above all honest. All reports and grades are available to parents via individual, secure log-ins. Effort and attainment grades are awarded throughout the year and we set great store by value added statistics. Tutors and Houseparents add overviews to the detailed subject comments that constitute a full report, so a pupil is never left merely with a sum of the parts. Whenever a pupil is failing to fulfil potential, they will be given positive guidance with any criticism.

And of course we hold parent evenings for each year group. We value and encourage parental feedback, and any parents unable to make formal parents’ meetings are most welcome to visit tutors, teachers and houseparents throughout the year.

Learning Support

The department supports those pupils with academic weaknesses and Specific Learning Difficulties (SpLD). It aims to ensure the full integration of any pupil with SpLD into the whole life of the School and the achievement of maximum potential. Bromsgrove’s aim is not to draw attention to any problem but to enable the pupil to build strategies which will lead to success.

The department carries out screening of pupils in order to inform subject teachers. Also, it identifies the extent of any suspected SpLD and updates documentation required for exam concessions. The department takes referrals for testing from parents, teachers and individual pupils. Specialist remedial tuition is provided by three teachers, where appropriate, at extra cost to parents. This tuition may be on a one to one basis or in small groups. The aim of this tuition is to focus on improving literacy and numeracy skills as well as helping with study skills, so that the pupil becomes an independent learner. All teaching staff have access to SpLD information.
